Design Covers All the Style Angles

Design covers all the style angles

In the endeavour to maximise the impression of space on this 475sqm block, the design of the pool to the rear was to become an important element. A conventional rectangle was seen as too limiting; there was a need for more geometry.

Poly Pools has geometry in abundance and came up with a concept involving extending the house-facing corners to fit the steps and opening the far side border to accommodate a feature spilling into the main body of water.

The effect is of the pool extending around the lawn at both ends. The lawn too is not all it seems. Green Earth Enterprises has installed a synthetic grass which fits the space perfectly. The structure of this Poly Pool is not of freeform concrete as might be expected but a system involving a vinyl liner. "They made casings bricked inside and they made the liner to fit the pool. It's designed especially to fit into the backyard," the owner said. "Poly Pools assures us that its liners are strong enough to take the weight of a car. That's good enough."

There is an appealing minimalist feel to the alfresco entertainment area.

The Mondo Landscapes rear wall is of simple cut-out rectangles. The tiles of the water feature blend one into the other and the glass fencing has a functional air to it, including an upturn near the outdoor kitchen.

Somehow the fact that there is this fully functional second kitchen (with dishwasher) out here challenges the minimalist dream.

Obviously, the reality of what needs to be done when entertaining has to be included in the planning.

And so it has.
